Gobi, mid August – mid September 2027 – (almost full)
Organisation is still in its early stage, so the travel dates are not set yet.
Organized by BioMongol Foundation together with scientists of the Senckenberg Institute in Müncheberg (Germany), this expedition will focus on the entomofauna of sub-Gobi and Gobi, roughly south of Bayanhongor on the map below. We will conduct our research in steppe, desert steppe, semi-desert, impressive sand dunes, climb some Gobi-Altai mountains (Baga bogd, Ikh bogd), pass salt water lakes and dried-up rivers. We travel under mostly arid to very arid conditions, but hopefully after some very welcome summer rainfall, so grasses and other vegetation should grow now, and flowers will bloom.

Highlights of the 2027 Expedition:
These habitats host a very specific insect community, adapted to such extreme conditions. One important topic of research will be Orthoptera, more in particular the group of band-winged grasshoppers, Oedipodinae (Orthoptera: Acrididae). Also beetles, such as tenebrionids will have our special attention.
How we travel:
Basically, we travel by two cars, maximum group size is 8 participants. We camp in the wild, so you are required to bring your own tent. Depending on local conditions, we may choose to use alternative ways of moving up to higher altitudes. We are in an arid and very arid region, so conditions can be tough. We have to be prepared for that.
Participation fee:
Three weeks, all expenses covered within Mongolia: Euro “to be determined” (pro forma estimate: Euro 2700,-). Flights are not included (pro forma estimate: Euro 850,-). For more details, or special requests, feel free to contact me.
